Former Riau Islands
governor Ismeth Abdullah was sentenced to two years in prison Monday for corruption
in the procurement of four fire trucks between 2004 and 2005.
"The defendant misused his authority to enrich other people or companies
and inflicted financial losses on the state," Judge Rae Suamba said at the
trial as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Ismeth was also fined Rp 100 million (US$11,000) for his wrongdoing.
The sentence was lighter than that demanded by the prosecutor, who sought a
sentence of four years in jail and a fine of Rp 200 million.
The state suffered Rp 5.4 billion in losses because of graft in the fire truck
procurement.
