An underground explosion that occurred on Jl. Cikini Raya, Central Jakarta, Tuesday morning, was allegedly triggered by biogas pressure, says Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hamidin.

“Theoretically, it could have been caused by biogas pressure from some sort of septic tank,” Hamidin said as quoted by tempointerakif.com.

“It was not because of gas pressure from either PGN (state-run gas distributor) or Pertamina (state-owned oil and gas company) pipes. Besides, the two companies have a great alarm system,” he said, adding that after the explosion there was smoke but no fire.

PGN spokesman Rachmat H confirmed that the explosion was not caused by gas pressure.

Hamidin said that there would be a thorough investigation from the police’s laboratory and forensic department, which would make an official statement as to the cause of the explosion.
