JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) called on the public Monday to contact the police if they are visited by people claiming to represent the antigraft body and attempting to blackmail them.

“Contact the police immediately so that the police can swiftly move and arrest them,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi told journalists.

Johan made the remarks following reports from the regions about alleged KPK impostors extorting money from local officials. The latest reports came from western Aceh and South Sulawesi.

The imposters told their victims that they could find them a job with the KPK in Jakarta in return for cash, or they threatened to take their targeted victims to court unless they handed over money.

He said the easiest way to prove if the KPK officers are real or not would be to ask them for a letter of assignment from commission.

“If they cannot show the document, they are impostors.” — JP
