Holidaymakers told not to use motorcycles

The Jakarta Police has urged citizens not to travel to their hometowns for the Idul Fitri celebration by motorcycle, saying that motorcycles pose the greatest accident risk

“National Police data shows that most traffic accidents involve motorcycles,” Adj. Sr. Comr. Ari Subiyanto, deputy chief of the Jakarta Traffic Police, said Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

According to last year’s data, traffic accident victims were mostly motorcycle riders, 76 percent out of a total of 1,646 incidents.

Ari reminded holidaymakers that motorcycles were not designed for long-distance traveling, or for carrying more that two people. Motorcycle riders get tired faster than car drivers and, therefore, easily lose concentration while riding.

Earlier, the Jakarta Transportation Office issued the same warning ahead of the annual exodus when most Jakartans usually return to their hometowns to ask for forgiveness from their parents and other older relatives.
