JAKARTA: In efforts to keep the city population under control, the administration on Tuesday announced plans to tighten procedures required in applying for a local ID card.
Under the plan, the administration will make it much harder for newcomers to apply for a Jakarta ID card.
“The requirements will make the process as difficult as possible, so not all outsiders can have ID cards issued by Jakarta administration,” population and housing deputy Margani Mustar told beritajakarta.com on Tuesday.
In addition, the administration will carry out raids, checking for people without appropriate documents and sending them back to their hometowns.
Data from the Jakarta branch of the Central Statistics Agency shows that the city population has reached 9.58 million.
Meanwhile, the population of Greater Jakarta totals 26.6 million, almost more than the combined populations of Australia (20.8 million), Singapore (4.4 million), Timor Leste (1.1 million) and Brunei Darussalam (390,000). — JP
