JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) called on public officials to not accept gifts during Idul Fitri holidays as they were considered gratuities.

“We have told all state institutions, ministries, state-owned enterprises and governors to decline offers of gifts,” KPK deputy chairman Haryono Umar was quoted as saying Thursday by Antara news agency.

He added that officials who had received gifts had to disclose the gifts to the KPK within 30 days or face corruption charges.

The 2001 Anticorruption Law stipulates that those found guilty of graft could be sentenced to at least four years in prison and pay Rp 200 million (US$22,200) in fines.

Haryono also reminded officials not to use official vehicles to travel to their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri, which falls on Sept. 10.

The KPK has not heard from any officials who had received gifts. — JP
