SURABAYA, East Java: The Surabaya Legal Aid Institute (LBH) and the East Java branch of the Indonesian Metal Workers Union (FSPMI) have set up a center to deal with Idul Fitri bonus-related problems.
Surabaya LBH Advocacy and Legal Aid division head Faiq Ashidiqie said the post was set up to provide protection and ensure that workers received their remunerative rights of an Idul Fitri bonus, or THR.
In 2008, a reported 29,095 workers in Surabaya did not receive a bonus.
Many workers contracted to third-party recruiters, he added, often faced difficulty getting the bonus.
“A 1994 decree by the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry on THR imposes weak sanctions for errant employers,” Faiq said. — JP
