‘I never say never, because I end up doing it anyway’

Singer Dewi Sandra is back, not that she ever really went away. But it’s been quiet, at least on the gossip front, since last year’s frenzy over her divorce from singer Glenn Fredly. After a trip to South Africa for the World Cup, she has a new single out, Sang Pemenang (The Champion), which is a rousing number for those going into battle, whether in the sports stadium or the competition of life.
My childhood nickname …
Miss Piggy! Because I was really fat when I was a kid.
I’m angered by …
Injustice.
I laugh at …
Babies, because they’re so innocent and funny. They just say what they want. It’s so adorable.
The last thing I did last night …
I watched a movie, and went home, watched some cable TV. Then I ate two marshmallows and fell asleep.
First thing I did this morning …
I went to the bathroom.
The last time I cried …
When I was in South Africa for the World Cup, looking at these children living in poverty. They danced for us.
I would never …
Say never, because I end up doing what I say I would never do.
Regrets, I’ve had a few, or too few to mention …
I wish I hung out with my father and mother more before they passed away.
I relax by …
I read books or watch movies or go to the beach. The best thing is going swimming – so relaxing.
Craziest thing I’ve done …
I’m still 30, I’m sure I’m still bound to do so many things. But it would have to be rappelling down a building. Doing the first six-meter-incline really scared me, but once I got that out the way, the 70-meter one was no problem.
I wish I could stop …
War and fighting and negativity and hate.
People would be surprised to know about me …
They know too much about me already. I’m an open book … But people that don’t know me would think I’m very serious, but I’m the nicest person on the planet! (laughs)
My idols …
Nelson Mandela, Oprah, Madonna. Mandela, because I just read his autobiography and his amazing struggle for his people. He is so strong and a great leader. Oprah, a smart woman, so strong and outspoken. Madonna, another strong woman who is not afraid to say what she means. They’re all strong and wise in their fields.
Best thing about celebrity …
Getting free stuff.
And the worst …
People feel like they can judge you constantly without knowing the facts.
My hobbies …
Traveling, reading, meeting new people and learning.
Best memory …
Too many good memories, it would be unfair. And I feel there are many more to come. I’m grateful for my life even though I have been tested many times. They make you stronger.
My worry for the future …
I don’t worry about the future. I live life and enjoy it. Before I used to be afraid of not working, or falling sick. Now I know it’s best to just enjoy life.
Religion to me is …
Faith is the strength of that person. Faith can change a person and make a person stronger, or weaker, depending on whether they have faith. I’m still soul searching and learning a lot of things about my faith. And I believe that God is good.
I’m inspired by …
Life, the good and the bad. When I see bad, I try to do better. When good, I’m inspired to be better.
Favorite song …
Satu Untuk Selamanya (One Forever), I’m being a bit narcissistic here, I co-wrote it with Alam Urbach. It’s about the marriage union of man and woman, human strength and enjoyment. Personally, I’ve experienced failure, but I’ve learned my lessons well. And it’s changed my perceptions about marriage and love.
I still need to …
Learn, so many things to learn. I just turned 30, and I feel like I have been reborn, back in kindergarten, learning and absorbing. Now I know what to do with what I learn.
Don’t ever call me …
A loser. Because I never give up.
When the going gets tough I …
Pray.
My life motto …
Anything is possible when you believe.
Remember me as …
Just myself, with all my flaws, as lessons for people not to do what I’ve done. But hopefully I’ve done some good stuff, so they can see that as well. And whoever it is they also can learn something from that.
