The Wirabuana military command overseeing Sulawesi has sent a companion of troops to Buol regency to help the local police restore order following a deadly clash between police and local residents earlier this week.
Regional military commander Maj. Gen. Amril Amin said on Thursday the soldiers were taken from the 711th battalion which is based in Toli-toli regency in Central Sulawesi.
”The troops will back up the police restore peace and order in Buol, but law enforcement measures will remain the responsibility of the police,” Amril said.
He added the military would rely on persuasion to help bring peace back to the region. “Hopefully with the presence of our personnel the situation will be fully restored,” he said.
At least seven people were killed as police opened fire at hundreds of local people who raided a police station in Buoi district in Buol on Tuesday night. The attack followed the death of a motorcycle taxi driver while under the police custody on Monday.
