A magnitude-5 earthquake hit Ende regency in East Nusa Tenggara at 10:38 a.m. local time Thursday, prompting residents to leave their homes and offices, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.
Ende Regional Legislative Council Speaker Marsel Petu told Antara state news agency that legislators and official had immediately evacuated the council building and gathered at an open field after the quake.
“There were two shocks. The first shock was not so strong, but the second one was so strong we scrambled out of the building,” he said.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the quake was centered 51 kilometers northeast of Ende, at 10 kilometers beneath the surface.
