Under public pressure, four of the nine political factions in the House of Representatives promised on Friday to seek a halt to a proposed new Rp 1.6 trillion (US$1776.6 million) building for the nation’s legislature.
The factions included the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the third largest faction; the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS); the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Greater Indonesian Movement (Gerindra) Party.
The parties were of the opinion that the project should be suspended until the House showed “satisfactory performance” as the public has demanded.
Representatives from the factions said that members had not been consulted on the project and they would seek a postponement at an upcoming plenary meeting.
Hanura faction chairman Syarifuddin Suding said that the state’s financial condition and strong public opposition would not allow the project to continue.
Pramono Anung Wibowo, a deputy House speaker from PDI-P, said members of his faction were shocked when the issue was raised by the national media.
“Our faction will ask the House to suspend the megaproject because it was not in line with the people’s socio-economic condition,” he added.
