The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has filed an appeal against the Corruption Court decision to sentence businessman Anggodo Widjojo to four years in prison on Tuesday for attempted bribery — a punishment many said was too lenient.
Anggodo was found guilty of offering a Rp 5.1 billion (US$566,100) bribe to KPK deputy chairmen through middlemen in effort to halt the KPK’s investigation of Anggodo’s fugitive brother, Anggoro Widjojo, who was previously implicated in bribery scandal linked to a Forestry Ministry procurement project.
The court, however, said that Anggodo was not guilty of obstruction of justice for filing false charges with the police against Bibit and Chandra.
“[KPK] prosecutors believe [Anggodo] was also guilty of obstruction of justice,” KPK Prosecution Director Ferry Wibisono said Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
KPK prosecutors had demanded Anggodo be sentenced to six years in prison and fined Rp 200 million.
