Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri has encouraged 14 politicians of the party who have been named suspects in connection with alleged bribery in the election of Miranda Goeltom as Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.

Megawati said the party would provide legal assistance to the politicians, but underlined its commitment to the fight against corruption.

“Don’t ever think that PDI-P is against corruption eradication,” Megawati was quoted by PDI-P senior lawmaker Trimedya Panjaitan on Friday.

Megawati, Trimedya added, asked the politicians to be mentally ready for the investigation. “Just face the legal process,” Trimedya quoted Megawati.

The Corruption Eradication Commission declared 26 current and former House of Representatives lawmakers suspects in the bribery case, including former national development planning minister Paskah Suzetta and PDI-P senior politician Panda Nababan.

Trimedya said eight of the 14 PDI-P politicians had sought legal assistance to the party.

Earlier in the day, Trimedya met with KPK leaders to question their decision to declare the PDI-P politicians suspects in the bribery case, which he said was premature.

“The state administration law says state officials who accept money without knowing that the money is a result of a crime cannot be prosecuted if they return the money,” Trimedya, who is former chairman of the House’s Commission III on justice and human rights, was quoted by kompas.com.
