National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said Friday he would propose two candidates as his successor.
He added that he would submit the names of the two candidates to the president before he retires on Oct. 10.
"There are two [candidates] only. Of course they are better than me,” Bambang said as quoted by kompas.com.
He refused to identify the candidates, who could be either three-star or two-star generals.
Several names have been touted as candidates for the force’s top job, including National Police general monitoring inspector Comr. Gen. Nanan Sukarna, National Police detective chief Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi andNational Police training institute head Insp. Gen. Imam Sujarwo.
The president needs the House of Representatives' approval to appoint the National Police chief.
