Indonesia has nominated veteran natural resources scientist Indroyono Soesilo to run for the top post at the UN’s Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah confirmed the government had selected Indroyono as the country’s candidate to replace current FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf, who will retire at the end of his third term next year.
“We have long conveyed our plans to nominate a candidate for FAO director-general to ministers from other countries on several occasions,” Faizasyah told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
He said Indonesia had approached neighboring countries to gather support for an Indonesian candidate to the post.
The election will be held in June 2011.
Indroyono is currently the deputy senior to Coordinating Public Welfare Minister Agung Laksono, who is responsible for coordinating 17 ministries and agencies dealing with, among others, sustainable development, education and poverty, food and nutrition, women and children, and the environment.
