The National Commission on Human Rights has identified alleged human rights violations in the clash between police officers and local people in the Central Sulawesi regency of Buol on Tuesday.
“Gross human rights violations occurred in the bloody incident,” regional commissioner of the rights body, Deddy Askari, said as quoted by Antara on Friday.
At least seven people were killed and dozens injured as police opened fire on angry residents who attacked a police station in Biau district. The raid was sparked by the death of a motorcycle taxi driver, Kasmir Timumun, while under the police custody on Monday.
Deddy said the commission had visited the incident site and met with the police, families of victims and hospital staff for clarification of the clash. “Our team is collecting more facts to support our argument that human rights violations did take place,” he said.
The police have questioned 11 officers in connection with the death of Kasmir, which fueled the riot. National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Untung Yoga Ana said the officers included Buol police traffic unit chief First Insp. Jefri Pantow and Biau police station chief First Isnp. Zakir Butudoka.
Untung said the police had not declared any suspect in the case.
