MEDAN: Thousands of students in Karo regency, North Sumatra, are on holidays following the eruption of nearby Mount Sinabung on Sunday, while others have forced their way back home despite warnings.
Karo Education Agency chief Seruan Sembiring the elementary, junior high and high school students were from 31 schools situated within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano.
The decision to send the students home was an anticipatory measure since the volcano was still classified as dangerous, he said.
“And how can they go to school if they are still living in refugee posts,” Seruan said, Thursday.
He added that his office could not predict how long the students would be out of school, since there had not been any clear information regarding the status of the volcano since the initial eruption.
Data at the education office shows that there are 6,691 students out of school because of the eruption. — JP
