An increase in the number of holiday makers traveling to their hometowns on motorcycles was visible on the West Java north coast road on Saturday, six days before the Idul Fitri celebration, Antara reported.
A police officer on duty at a security post in Patrol district in Indramayu regency, Brig. Kadar, said motorcycles bearing Jakarta license plates began to pour into the north coast road at about 10 a.m. He predicted the holiday makers left Jakarta after pre-dawn meals.
"The number is expected to continue surging in the coming few hours,” he said.
A holiday reveler, Suwarno of the Central Java town of Tegal, said he preferred traveling in the daylight for safety reasons. He said he could see potholes along the route between Patrol and Karangampel districts in Indramayu regency.
“The road is dangerous for motorcyclists due to the straight and bumpy lane, not to mentions potholes that dot the street which may be not visible at night,” Suwarno said.
Indramayu police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Nasri Winarto said the exodus of holiday makers traveling on cars or motorcycles would peak on Monday. He called on motorcycles to make as many stops as possible due to the long-haul trip.
The government has asked holiday makers from riding motorcycles, given the high road death tolls, which reached 417 during the Idul Fitri exodus last year.
