Central Sulawesi police chief Brig. Gen. Muh Amin Saleh apologized on Saturday to families of victims of the clash in Buol regency on Tuesday, which left eight people dead and 22 others injured.

Amin expressed his regret over the loss of lives as he delivered his speech during the funeral of one of the victims, Supriyadi, in Diat village in Bukal district, about 20 kilometers north of Buol. Supriyadi, who died at Buol general hospital, is the latest fatality of the incident.

“On behalf of the police force and myself I extend my deep regret and apology for our flaws in handling security,” Amin said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Amin, Buol regency administration and the management of a village cooperative that employed Supriyadi handed in compensation to his family following the funeral.

Earlier in the day Deputy Governor Achmad Yahya also gave compensation to Supriyadi’s family. Yahya asked families of the victims to trust the police’s commitment to settlement of the case in accordance with the law.

Police opened fire at hundreds of angry residents who ransacked the Biau police station on Tuesday after learning that a motorcycle taxi driver had died while under the police custody on Monday.

An initial investigation conducted by the National Commission on Human Rights revealed serious human right violations perpetrated by the state apparatus in the incident.
