People in a number of villages in North Bengkulu fled their homes as a magnitude-6 earthquake jolted the regency just after midnight on Saturday.
There were no reports of casualties or damages following the strong quake, but the local residents opted to stay out of their property for fear of aftershocks.
"We are afraid of entering our home after the strong tremor as it reminded us of the major quake in 2007,” Antoni, 54, told Antara news agency. He said he evacuated his family members as soon as the tremor was felt.
Antoni said the magnitude-7.9 earthquake three years ago devastated his village and claimed a number of lives.
A few hours later the residents went home to eat pre-dawn meals.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake struck the Indian Ocean 46 kilometers southwest of North Bengkulu at a depth of 28 kilometers beneath the seabed. The temblor did not cause a tsunami.
The quake was also felt in the neighboring province of Lampung. People in Hanakau village in West Lampung rushed to a field in panic.
