Karanganyar military commander Lt. Col Lilik Sutikno visited Solopos daily office in the Central Java city of Surakarta on Tuesday to seek an apology from a reporter whom he beat last week.
Lilik said he regretted his failure to maintain his composure after reading a story written by Solopos journalist Triyono on a corruption trial which implicated the regional military.
The story, quoting the court hearing, said Rp 21.9 billion of ill-gotten money raised from the alleged corruption went to a number of institutions, including the Karanganyar military. Lilik said, however, a military intelligence officer who monitored the court hearing told him the report was erroneous.
When he summoned Triyono to seek clarification, the reported insisted he wrote the story based on the court hearing.
“That sparked my anger and I beat him several times,” Lilik said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
He said he was ready for the legal consequences of his action, as Triyono had filed a report with the military police in connection with the assault.
Lilik’s direct superior Col. Abdul Rahman Nasir said his subordinate’s apology would not stop the legal process against him.
