The United Development Party (PPP) is considering nominating President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s youngest son, Edi Baskoro, as the party’s candidate in the Banten gubernatorial election next year.

Chairman of the PPP’s Banten chapter Ahmad Dimyati Natakusumah said on Tuesday that Edi, also known as Ibas, was one of three people likely to be named by the party for its gubernatorial candidate.

“For the time being our party members have supported Edi Baskoro, Wahidin and Mulyadi Jayabaya,” Dimyati said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Wahidin Halim is the current Tangerang regent, and Mulyadi is the Lebak regent.

Dimyati said the three candidates had been deemed competent to lead the Banten province to prosperity. Dimyati said the President’s son had proved his leadership by winning a House of Representatives seat on his first attempt. In June, Ibas was appointed to Democratic Party secretary-general.

The Muslim-based party, Dimyati added, would conduct a survey to gauge the popularity of the candidates.
