Diponegoro Military commander overseeing Central Java Maj. Gen. Budiman dismissed on Wednesday Karanganyar military chief Lt. Col. Lilik Sutikna.

An internal investigation found evidence that Lilik had beaten Solopos daily journalist Triyono at the Karanganyar military command on Sept. 1 out of anger with the newspaper’s report of a graft trial. Quoting the court hearing, Triyono wrote in his report that some of the ill-gotten money went to the Karanganyar military.

“The military police are investigating the case,” Lilik’s direct superior Col. Abdul Rahman Kadir said as quoted by kompas.com.

Earlier on Tuesday Lilik visited Solopos office to apologize to Triyono for the incident.

On Wednesday morning more than 100 journalists working in the Central Java city of Surakarta met with Abdul Rahman to express their concern about the violence against the press. They demanded Lilik’s dismissal, a transparent investigation into the case and protection of Triyono and his family.
