Local police in Sumedang, West Java have decided to redirect traffic away from the congested Java northern coastal highway to an alternative route, as homebound traveler numbers increase ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday.

Up to 100 vehicles a minute have passed though  Cijelag junction in Sumedang since early Wednesday, causing grinding traffic jams, Antara state news agency reported.

The police decided to redirect the traffic through Cikamurang, Kadipaten and Majalengka, which they call the “middle route,” to ease the highway traffic.

Authorities have predicted that at least 2.4 million homebound travelers using 600,000 vehicles would travel through West Java’s northern and southern routes, an increase of 300,000 compared to last year’s 2.1 million.
