The Indonesian delegation presented too many issues at the Kinabalu talks on Monday, which had prevented the team from highlighting border issues as the current problem that needs immediate settling with Malaysia. This meant the talks ended without proper results, an observer says.
Indonesian Civilized Circle (Lima) director Ray Rangkuti said the team needs to be more focused on the border issue and set aside other issues, such as migrant workers.
“I don’t think it was good timing for Indonesia to be mentioning the migrant worker issue alongside the border issue, which is the most recent problem. The extra considerations burdened the team thus hampering them in settling the border issue,” Ray told a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Ray said the result of the talks had been unsatisfactory because the government had a weak bargaining position and lacked firmness.
“We did not perform any [psychological warfare] moves, for example by withdrawing our Ambassador to Malaysia or calling on Indonesian migrant workers, before the meeting,” he added.
