Rising demand for chicken ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday in the Central
Java capital of Semarang
has increased the market price of the commodity by 50 percent.
Aryani, a housewife from Banyumanik, said she bought a chicken for Rp 75,000
(US$8.30), up from the normal price of Rp 50,000.
“It’s expensive, but it doesn’t matter as it only happens once a year. We will use
it for our chicken curry [opor ayam],”
she said.
In another market, chickens were being sold for up to Rp 80,000.
A chicken seller, Prapti, said the demand for chicken usually increased ahead
of Idul Fitri as many people liked to cook chicken curry. She said she normally sold 20
chickens per day.
