Followers of the Jamaah Syattariyah Islamic group in the West Sumatra regency of Padangpariaman will celebrate Idul Fitri on Saturday, one day after Muslims in the rest of the country observe the Islamic holiday.

The imam of the group, Ali Imran, said Thursday leaders of the group would assemble on Friday after observing the moon in Koto Tuo (Padangpanjang), Agam, Pesisir Selatan and Sijunjung. Thousands of the group’s followers are expected to witness the moon sighting ritual.

“If the moon is not visible, we will talk to imams in other regions, then we will assemble at the Syekh Burhanuddin Mosque,” he said as quoted by Antara state news agency.

Followers of the Islamic group are spread across Padangpariaman, with most of them living in Ulakan district.
