Fire razed hundreds of motorcycles that were parked inside a warehouse at the Kupang police headquarters on Friday, prompting their owners to demand compensation for their devastated assets.
Witnesses said the fire started at 2 a.m. after they heard an explosion from inside the warehouse, where the police were keeping the motorcycles after seizing them from their owners for traffic violations during the Idul Fitri eve parade on Thursday night.
“The blast came suddenly and the fire quickly spread across the warehouse,” one of the witnesses said. The fire also burned down a patrol car parked outside the warehouse.
At least six fire trucks were deployed to douse the fire, which was put off after two hours of struggle.
East Nusa Tenggara police chief Brig. Gen. Yorri Yance Worang immediately ordered a thorough investigation into the case of the fire. However, he was undecided as to whether the police would claim responsibility for the losses inflicted on the motorcycle owners.
Kristian, whose son lost his motorcycle to the fire, insisted that the police should be responsible for the accident.
