Tens of thousands of Jakartans flocked to Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta on Saturday morning on the second day of the Idul Fitri holidays for a family day out.
Visitors were arriving to the popular zoo by motorcycle, private car, public
transport, and in groups in pick-up trucks and large trucks, Kompas.com reported at 8:45 a.m.
Police officers and zoo attendants were seen busily directing parking near the zoo's entrance.
At the main gate several police officers reminded visitors to keep close tabs on their family members in the crowded area. “We urge families
to take care of their children.... don’t ever get separated,” one of the
officers said over a loudspeaker.
Ragunan Zoo spokesman Wahyudi Bambang said the
number of visitors to the zoo was expected to reach about 100,000, the same figure as on the same day last year. He said the zoo management's had not arranged any special
attractions this year.
“We just offer rides on certain animals, such as elephants, horses
and camels,” Wahyudi said as quoted by Kompas.com.
To maintain security, the zoo has deployed 100
officers, who are backed up by an additional 150 police officers, Wahyudi said. “We’re
ready to serve the visitors,” he added.
