Mild quake shakes Yogyakarta

A magnitude 5 earthquake just before midnight on Sunday created panic in Bantul, south of Yogyakarta, but caused little damage.

An Indonesian Red Cross volunteer, Giyanto, said Monday that the temblor had only inflicted minor damage on a house in Panggungharjo village.

“The house was empty, as the owner, Ros, was celebrating Idul Fitri in his hometown. One of the wooden beams that hold up the roof cracked due to the tremor,” he told Antara state news agency.

Giyanto said local people fled their homes in panic as soon as the quake struck, 20 minutes before midnight. “But after a few minutes, they returned to their homes,” he added.

A major quake devastated Bantul in 2006, killing thousands of people.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency located the epicenter of the quake at 23 kilometers southeast of Bantul at a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea floor. The temblor was reportedly also felt in Klaten and Sukoharjo in Central Java.
