Sept. 6, Online: Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and his Malaysian counterpart Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman arrived at the Le Meridien Hotel on Monday at 12:30 p.m. local time for the 16th Indonesia-Malaysia joint commission meeting. The meeting highlights issues of maritime borders, the Aug. 13 arrests of Indonesian civil servants and Malaysian fishermen in Indonesian waters and Indonesian migrant workers, according to the hosting minister. “We’ll discuss [among others] the Aug. 13 incident and try to fix it so, that there will not be similar incidents in the future,” Anifah said. He said during the discussion, the Malaysian government would also raise the Malaysian Police’s report saying Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry inspectors had extorted the seven Malaysian fishermen caught red-handed for illegally fishing in Indonesian waters if the latter wanted to be free.

The peace and harmony between the two countries should be maintained. Yes, there will be extremists on both sides. Leaders have to take a more diplomatic approach to resolving the matters.

This is a good step forward. Malaysia and Indonesia share too much in common to be fighting all the time. I hope they will realize that their strength is in unity and not disunity.
