President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says he has received a report from Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto regarding the collapse of a section of the newly completed Jl. RE Martadinata road in North Jakarta on Thursday.

The president said the minister’s explanation about the cause of the accident was understandable.

“I have received a report on the collapse of Jl RE Martadinata, the cause of which is explainable. Therefore I support the public works minister’s argument and ask for a thorough investigation into the case,” the president said on the sidelines of his visit to Cikampek, West Java to monitor the reverse exodus of Idul Fitri holiday makers on Friday.

He expected repair works on the road to start immediately.

A100-meter section of the road connecting Tanjung Priok and Ancol in North Jakarta collapsed into the underlying Japat River. Winarno, a director of PT Bina Marga Area II overseeing road construction, said land subsidence as a result of recent dredging in the river running parallel to the north coast had caused the collapse.

The North Jakarta police were seen close the access to the subsiding road section and reroute motorists onto alternative roads on Friday morning, kompas.com reported.
