Banten legislative council told the South Tangerang administration to immediately demolish dozens of illegal billboards erected along several main roads in the new municipality.
“The South Tangerang Integrated Permit Service Agency (BP2T) has confirmed that a number of giant billboards erected along Jl. Raya Serpong and Jl. Raya Puspitek are illegal,” Eddy Yus Amirsyah, chairman of commission V at Banten legislative council said after a meeting with South Tangerang acting mayor Eutik Suharta on Tuesday.
Eddy said he had asked the acting mayor to take measures against those responsible for the placement of the illegal billboards.
“The billboards must be demolished for violating the regulations and deprive the region of potential revenue,” he said.
He said the council also asked the regional administration not to extend permits for billboards that occupy road medians because they endanger the public.
He recounted a billboard erected by the developer of Serpong City Paradise housing complex at an intersection on Jl. Raya Puspitek, which collapsed recently.
South Tangerang BP2T head Mursan Sobari said the agency found difficulties in removing the billboards as they had been in place long before the municipality was inaugurated.
He promised that the agency would not issue permits for new giant billboards until 2011 and would demolish all illegal billboards erected along Jl. Raya Serpong in December.
“In the future billboards may not exceed 2 square meters in size,” he added.
