State prosecutors sought on Wednesday the maximum sentence of death for six men on trial for allegedly trafficking nearly 700 kilograms of dried marijuana in the Banten capital of Serang, kompas.com reported.
Prosecutors Andri Saputra and Mali Diaan told the panel of judges at the Serang District Court that the six defendants, identified as Armilah, Samat, Sulkarnain, Suraidi, Jaka and Sofian, had violated Article 114 of the 2009 antinarcotics law, which carries a maximum sentence of death.
The prosecutors said the defendants had challenged the government’s program to fight drugs and damaged the morality of younger generation and their future.
Presiding judge Pinta Uli adjourned the trial until next week to hear the defendants’ and their lawyer’s defense arguments.
