Indonesian senior high school students prove they could fare well in international scientific competitions after winning three silver and two bronze medals at the 4th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Beijing recently.

The national team won the silvers from Raymond Djajalaksana of SMA IPEKA Sunter in North Jakarta, Anas Maulidi Utama of SMAN 5 Surabaya and Hans Triar Sutanto of SMAK 2 Petra Surabaya. Ahmad Raditya Cahya of SMAN 1 Yogyakarta and Widya Ageng Setyo Tetuko of SMA Taruna Nusantara in Magelang took a bronze each.

National Education Ministry official Suharlan told kompas.com on Wednesday that Indonesia ranked 13th from a field of 24 teams in the Sept. 12-21 competition, which saw India emerge as the overall winner with three golds and two bronzes.

The students had undergone four months of training under supervision of Bandung Institute of Technology experts.
