YOGYAKARTA: The US government has allocated US$165 million for education programs in Indonesia, US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel said.

He said the fund was expected to help improve education in Indonesia as well as stimulate stronger bilateral relations.

Merciel, who recently replaced Cameron Hume, raised the issue at a lecture at Yogyakarta’s Gadjah Mada University on Thursday.

He expressed concern for the fact that fewer Indonesian students were studying in the US in the last 10 years.

Only 7,500 Indonesian students currently study in US, a drop from 15,000 Merciel said. —JP
