New Zealand officials say a pilot was killed when his
ultralight aircraft crashed at an airport on North Island.
Police Inspector Karl Wright-St. Clair says Jeffery Arthur
Bryant's aircraft was seen by witnesses spiraling downward before hitting the
runway shortly after takeoff Monday morning at Tauranga Airport.
Local fire service officer Lindsay Nicol says the
56-year-old Bryant was trapped in the wreckage and emergency services had to
lift the aircraft to get his body out.
Nicol says he saw the ultralight flying laps above the
airport earlier in the morning. It crashed at about 8:40 a.m. (2040 GMT
Sunday).
Two Civil Aviation Authority crash investigators are at the
site to inspect the wreckage and determine the cause of the crash.
