A- A A+

Your comments on a 100-meter section of Jl. RE Martadinata in North Jakarta collapsed last week, affecting nearby businesses and residents.

No go: Using a small boat, two volunteers measure the depth of a section of Jl. RE Martadinata, which collapsed on Thursday last week despite having only recently been built. JP/P.J. Is that a sink hole? In Jakarta? Strange?

My engineering eye observed from the photo that the road has been rebuilt and heightened at
least five times or the land on which it has been constructed is subsiding.
This fact should have been taken into consideration in the design and proper engineering measures should have been taken to either prevent this (piling which is costly) or relocate the alignment (also costly because of land acquisition). In any case safety of road users has not been observed.

We always knew those “penguins” would eventually cause a disaster in Tanjung Priok.
Why hasn’t the government taken the giant penguins seriously yet? Sad for Tanjung Priok residents.

There is no doubt that moving Indonesia’s capital would bring benefits to the other, rich parts of Indonesia. But will Jakarta change? No. It will still be the commercial hub of Indonesia!
Why waste money moving capitals and use it instead for building much needed infrastructure in Jakarta? Rio de Janeiro didn’t stop growing when Brazil moved their capital to Brasilia.
