FPI carries no threat: Jakarta police chief

The Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Timur Pradopo dismissed concerns over the Islam Defenders Front’s (FPI) recent harassment of several cultural centers that planned to screen a gay film festival.

“There was no threat. They were just complaining,” Timur said Tuesday at the State Palace, as quoted by kompas.com.

Earlier, hundreds of members of the FPI raided the Erasmus Huis Dutch cultural center in Kuningan, South Jakarta demanding closure of the Q Film Festival.

Members of the hard-line group removed movie posters advertising the festival, which was to be held from Sept. 21 to Sept. 30 in a number of theaters and cultural centers.

The organizers have 24 hours to stop the festival, FPI Jakarta branch chairman Salim Alatas said.
Timur said the FPI’s complaint had been delivered to the festival organizers.
