The Jakarta Police have said that a recent clash between two rival groups on Jl. Ampera Raya, near the South Jakarta District Court, on Wednesday afternoon was impossible to predict or prepare for.
“We don’t think that we were [not prepared for a clash] because the clash took place on a road. We cannot predict people's intention on streets,” said police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.
Boy said the police had been fully prepared for a clash at the court, and had deployed personnel there from 7 a.m.
On Wednesday afternoon three people died in a clash between rival groups attending the trial of defendants involved in a brawl at Blowfish nightclub in South Jakarta in April, which also claimed one life.
South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Gatot Eddy said subsequent trials might be moved to the South Jakarta Police Office or the Jakarta Police Office to avoid a repeat of the violence.
