No comment on alleged Bakrie tax evasion: Police chief

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri declined to comment on the recent testimony of former tax office official Gayus Tambunan on the alleged bribes paid by the Bakrie Group to evade paying taxes.

“Let the legal proceedings finish,” Bambang said briefly at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Gayus testified before the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday that he had accepted US$3 million to “manage” the tax reports from several Bakrie Group companies, such as PT Bumi Resources and Arutmin.

The Bakrie Group patron is Aburizal Bakrie, the chairman of the Golkar Party and one of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s closest political partners.
