Police in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara fired warning shots on Wednesday evening to disperse dozens of local residents after they forced their way into the police office to release two neighbors from detention.

Antara news agency reported that as of 8:30 p.m. more people from Pelangan village thronged the street outside the police office to protest the arrest of their neighbors, who have been named suspects for a murder.

West Lombok police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Supriyanto told the angry residents the two suspects had been transferred to the provincial police. He asked representatives of the mass to look into the cells themselves to find their neighbors, but the residents rejected the offer.

Children and women were among the protesters.

The provincial police dispatched reinforcement troops and a water canon to the regency to help the local police deal with the protest.

Earlier this month clashes erupted between police and local residents in the Central Sulawesi town of Buol, the South Sumatra town of Musi Rawas and the West Papua capital of Manokwari, leaving 10 people dead.
