Muara Baru area in North Jakarta has sunk by 116 centimeters in the last eight years, the deepest proven land subsidence in Jakarta according to the provincial industrial and energy agency.
Agency head Yusuf Effendi Pohan said the land subsidence took place as far as Cibubur, east of Jakarta, with the most serious collapse found in the northern part of Jakarta.
Observation in 60 subsidence zones revealed that West Cengkareng in West Jakarta sank by 65 centimeters, Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta by 47 centimeters, Jl. Thamrin in Central Jakarta by 15 centimeters and Cibubur by 11 centimeters between 2002 and 2010.
Groundwater extraction, load of constructions and natural consolidation of alluvial soil are to blame for most cases of land subsidence in Jakarta, Yusuf told kompas.com.
