An aide says former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalized with a chest infection during a trip to Australia.

Sufi Yusof, an aide to the longtime leader, says Mahathir was admitted to a Melbourne hospital Saturday.

He says the 85-year-old Mahathir is suffering from a chest infection and is receiving antibiotics and physiotherapy.

He says Mahathir's condition is stable and he is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days for observation and rest.

Mahathir, who often travels abroad, arrived in Melbourne with his wife on Thursday to address a seminar on human development.

Mahathir led Malaysia for 22 years until 2003. He has undergone two coronary bypass surgeries, the latest in 2007.
