22 more retailers take part in VAT refund program

D

irectorate General of Taxation has added 22 retail outlets to its Value Added Tax (VAT) refund program for foreign tourists, after eight companies successfully completed a trial refund program earlier this year.

“We have received many positive responses both from tourists and retail outlets in providing facilities for VAT refunds for tourists,” said Robert Pakpahan, business process transformation director at the Directorate General of Taxation, on Friday.

He said that positive responses were evinced not only by increased VAT refund claims submitted by foreign tourists but also by the growing number of applications submitted by retail outlets to join the program.

The appointment of 22 retail outlets brings the number of retailers involved in the Directorate General of Taxation’s program to 30.

On April 1, eight retail outlets were appointed by the directorate to participate in the VAT refunds program, including five retailers in Jakarta (Pasaraya Blok M, Sarinah Thamrin, Metro Pondok Indah Mall, Metro Plaza Senayan, and Keris Gallery at Terminal 2D in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) and three retailers in Bali (Batik Keris at Discovery Shopping Mall, UC Silver in Batu Bulan, Gianyar; and Mayang Bali in Kuta).

Under the program, tax offices will refund the VAT imposed on all taxable goods sold by wholesalers or retailers.  The tax can be recovered by foreign tourists when leaving the country.  At present, foreign tourists can claim VAT refunds at two international airports, Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta and Ngurah Rai in Bali.

Robert said the government hoped tourists would also soon be able to claim VAT refunds at several other international airports.

The directorate said 14 of 22 newly appointed outlets are located in Jakarta, including Batik Keris Citraland, Batik Keris Menteng, Batik Keris Pondok Indah Mall 2, Batik Keris Pacific Place, Keris Department Store Menteng, Keris Department Store Puri Indah Mall, Jean Paul Gaultier Plaza Indonesia, Christian Loubountin Plaza Indonesia, Club Monaco Plaza Indonesia, Sogo Plaza Senayan, Sogo Kelapa Gading, Sogo Pondok Indah Mall, Sogo Emporium Pluit, Seibu Grand Indonesia, and Alun-alun Indonesia Grand Indonesia.

The other seven retailers are in Bali, including Sogo Bali Collection, Sogo Discovery Shopping Mall, Alun-alun Indonesia Nusa Dua, Batik Keris at Ngurah Rai airport, Atlas South Sea Pearl in Sanur, Dewis in Sukawati, Gianyar and Windu Sari in Batu Bulan, Gianyar.

Batik Keris  in Supermal Karawaci, Tangerang was also appointed to join  the program. (ebf)
