Gus Dur’s hero status not official: Minister

Social Services Minister Salim Segaf Al-Jufri said that Indonesia’s fourth President Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid had not been declared a national hero, as previously reported.

“We have not declared it just yet. We are still discussing it,” Salim said Tuesday in Jakarta as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

On Monday, kompas.com said that East Java deputy governor Saifullah Yusuf said that Gus Dur had been officially declared a national hero and hoped the government would announce it on Nov. 1.

Salim said the ministry received many requests to name national heroes, but the Office of the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister would determine if Gus Dur would be so honored.
