New Jakarta Police Insp. Gen. Sutarman was officially installed Thursday in an official ceremony at the Jakarta Police Headquarters.

Sutarman replaces Comr. Gen. Timur Pradopo, who was promoted to the National Police’s security affairs division chief this week.

“Comr. Gen. Timur has done many things; it is my duty to continue his efforts for the sake of the capital's citizens,” Sutarman said in his opening speech.

Sutarman was the former West Java Police chief.

In a surprise decision that ended weeks of speculation, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday proposed Comr. Gen. Timur Pradopo as the sole candidate for the next National Police chief.

The announcement came only hours after Timur was promoted to the rank of a three-star commissioner general, a necessary post for police chief candidates, from inspector general.
