Australia upset Paraguay 1-0 in friendly

Australia defender David Carney scored with a slashing left-footed shot in the second half Saturday to give Australia a 1-0 win over Paraguay in a friendly.

After the ball had fallen to him from a long-range free kick that was blocked, Carney threaded his powerful shot from 10 meters between the near post and goalkeeper Diego Baretto in the 53rd minute.

Australia dominated the match but showed a lack of composure in finishing, both from general play and set-pieces.

Paraguay's defense was well organized, controlling the obvious threats from Australia of Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill.
