The South Jakarta District Court has sentenced well-known fashion designer Adjie Notonegoro to four months in jail for embezzling money belonging to his business partner.
“We found him guilty of embezzlement,” presiding judge Artha Theresia said as quoted by Kompas.com.
Adjie, best known for his elaborate traditional kebaya, was reportedly asked to sell a diamond valued at Rp 970 million (US$108,640) for his business partner and long-time friend Melvin Chandrianto Tjhin. However, Melvin contends Adjie failed to pay the amount in full after the diamond was sold.
Adjie has been detained at Cipinang prison since July. Several celebrities, including his nephew, Ivan Gunawan, have offered to post bail for him.
It remains unclear if Adjie will appeal the verdict as he will leave prison next month.
