The East Jakarta Municipality cleaned up on Wednesday the East Flood Canal in three areas, which are South Cipinang Besar in Jatinegara, Pondok Bambu and Pulo Gebang.

There were at least 600 personnels from the Public Order Agency and the Sanitation Agency cleaning the river from waste such as plastics and wooden planks.

East Jakarta Mayor Murdhani, who led the cleaning program, suggested his residents not throw garbage  in to the river.

“I will provide rewards to those who care for the environment,” he said.

According to Murdhani, the cleaning is led by the district head of each area.

“I hope that this cleaning initiative will be held periodically in the future,” he said.

The half-constructed canal does not yet function. It is currently being used as a dump site.
